Required Equipment
Girls must have the following to play:
- Mouth guard. Must be visible to referees, so no white ones. Invisialign retainers are not mouthguards.
- Women's lacrosse stick. Shop local at Northstar Lacrosse (mention MLA for a discount!) or find one at Dick's Sporting Goods. List of regulation girls sticks can be found here.
- Goggles. Protective eyewear use is required. Stores listed above carry certified goggles on this list.
Cleats are highly recommended but not required. While there are official "lacrosse" cleats, soccer cleats are perfect, too.
Jerseys
Game jerseys are required and must be purchased during registration. Players wear black bottoms of choice to complete the game day uniform.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What equipment is needed for your Spring and Summer leagues?
A: All players are required to have eye protection that meets the ASTM standard, a women's lacrosse stick legal for play (list here), and a colored mouthguard easily visible for referees. Invisalign retainers are not allowed.
Cleats are recommended but not required.
Q: If I'm an eighth-grader, can I try out for MHS lacrosse teams this spring?
A: The MHS girls lacrosse teams do not open tryouts for middle schoolers at this time. If you are an eighth-grader playing on a different high school lacrosse team during the 2025 high-school season you cannot, by MSHSL rule, participate in youth field lacrosse during the spring field season. Eighth-graders who participate on a high school team will receive a prorated refund for their primary spring lacrosse registration, minus the cost of a uniform if purchased in the Spring registration.
Q: Is my child too old [or sometimes too young] to start lacrosse?
A: No! With guidance from the "Lacrosse Athlete Development Model" developed by U.S. Lacrosse, we gear all of our progams to be age appropriate. In addition, we design our rosters and our league team registrations levels to be developmentally tied to the athletes at a given age, in a given cohort, and on a given team. In short, we do everything we can to make our lacrosse experience developmentally productive, with more emphasis placed on developing young athletes, lacrosse players, and citizens than on winning.
